The Philosophy behind Steampunk Creative Engineering

Sustainably Preserving Our Heritage, One Piece at a Time

Our Heritage

Years ago, tools and machines were made to last, not built down to a price where they could be used and thrown away, as is so often the case today. Because they were so well made, many of these old items have survived into modern times. No longer required for their original purposes, they languish in cupboards or sheds. It is my aim to sympathetically reinvent these heritage items, making them both decorative and functional; useful again in our modern world, preserving some little parts of our heritage to prevent them from going to scrap, or worse, landfill and being lost forever.

Repurposed

I am proud to say that everything that I create is built around something that is salvaged, reclaimed or rescued from a waste stream, nothing is made entirely from new components.

Safety

That said, for safety reasons, I use only new British Standard/CE/UKCA electrical parts in my lamps, sourced from reputable UK or European manufacturers wherever possible. Occasionally I may re-use something like a trigger switch built into an electric drill but only after it has been thoroughly cleaned and tested and I am 110% certain it is safe to re-use. I will also mention it in my description for transparency. Every lamp I create, refurbish or repair is individually safety tested and certified.

Environment

I carry out all my operations in an environmentally responsible manner. I avoid the use of chemicals, preferring traditional methods. Any waste - and there's not much! - is sent for recycling. Joints in copper and brass are soldered, using lead free solder, to ensure good electrical contact for safe earthing. Any paint used is lead free modern paint from a reputable manufacturer.

Low Energy Use

I only use modern energy saving LED bulbs in my lamps, these are great in several ways;

  • They use very little electricity, typically 2 to 8 Watts. A 2W bulb will take 500 hours of use to consume a single kw/h unit of electricity - great for your pocket and the planet.
  • LED bulbs have a lifespan of years, most state 15,000 plus hours operation on their packaging.
  • They are far less fragile than old incandescent filament bulbs.
  • There are many fantastic options for decorative effect.

I carefully select the bulb(s) to suit each lamp and always supply those bulbs with the lamp, saving you the time and expense of going shopping for them after you have your lamp.

Satisfaction Guaranteed

Satisfying my customers is top priority. That’s why I believe in offering fair and transparent prices with no hidden fees or extra charges and give a 12 month warranty* against manufacturing defects and faulty materials on all my products, providing the product has not been altered or disassembled.

* Refund or repair. As most of my creations are unique, I cannot usually offer to exchange like for like.
