Frequently Asked Questions

Some further information

How long will it take to dispatch my purchase?

None of my listings are offered for sale until they are complete and have passed testing, consequently, all normal listings in my shop are ready for prompt dispatch, usually next day.
Custom orders and commissions will naturally take longer as I will need to get the necessary parts together to make exactly what you require before building and testing. Some things may be difficult to source and may result in a longer lead time. I will be glad to discuss the likely timescale with you and give you an estimate before you place your order.

What packaging do you use?

As an upcycler, my business is founded on sustainability and the principle of re-using things, packaging is no exception, so if I have suitable used packaging that is in good, clean condition I will use that. It is also cheaper for customers and better for the environment to re-use packaging so, unless you ask otherwise beforehand, I will normally post your purchase to you in re-used packaging.

Is the bulb included?

In short, Yes, all items are supplied with whichever bulb is shown in the photos. Furthermore, all will be low wattage LED units, more expensive to buy but with a longer life, a more decorative appearance and lower power consumption to help keep your electricity bill down and help save our planet.

Are your products tested and safe?

Yes, all mains voltage electrical products (upcycles and refurbishments) are built with safety as the priority, are fully earthed where they have a metal body or chassis and will undergo a rigorous safety inspection and test before being offered for sale. This test is sometimes known as a PAT test (portable appliance test) There is a label with the test date, reference number and result on the flex or, sometimes, the base of the product. I record the results of the test and supply them to the customer with their purchase.

Do I need to have my items tested again?

For use in a commercial environment, there is an duty placed on business owners in the Electricity at Work Regulations (1989) and Provision and Use of Work Equipment (1998) and others, to ensure that electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition. This effectively means that business owners need to inspect and test regularly and keep a register. I recommend that testing is carried out annually when used in an office or retail setting. For domestic use, owners are not obliged to have items tested but I strongly recommend they inspect for integrity regularly, especially the flex and plug which can easily become damaged.

Do you re-use electrical parts?

In the vast majority of my items, I will use only new BS or CE certified mains electrical parts. Occasionally I may re-use an original vintage part, such as a ceramic lampholder, but only if I am completely satisfied that it is in excellent condition and is completely safe to use – and I will make it clear in the description that this has been done.
With low voltage components such as LEDs, I may make use of previously used parts in excellent condition and again, I will make this clear in the item’s description.

Are your lamps suitable for outside use?

Most of my lamps use indoor rated electrical components only so are not suitable for use out of doors. Those that are suitable for outside use will have this mentioned in the description. I take many of my listing photographs outside to get good daylight so potential purchasers can see exactly what is for sale, this does not mean that the lamps are OK to use outdoors, if in any doubt, please message me for clarification.

Do you ship internationally?

Sorry, I do not - at the moment. This is for various reasons but principally because of varying electrical standards/voltages/fittings/regulations in different countries - the parts for other countries are both rare and costly here in the UK. Looking forward, once I find reasonably priced suppliers and am comfortable that I can comply with another country’s standards and regulations, that may change for some parts of the world.
